What to log, and what to skip

  • Log everything you eat and drink, including the parts you would rather not. A diary that omits the biscuit is not measuring your intake; it is measuring your intentions.
  • Log drinks with calories in them — juice, milk in coffee, alcohol, smoothies. These are the most commonly forgotten and among the easiest to consume without noticing.
  • Log cooking fat. It is invisible in the finished dish and frequently the single largest item you did not record.
  • Skip black coffee, tea without milk, water, and spices. They round to nothing and logging them only adds friction.
  • Log the day you went over, in full. Those days are the most informative entries in the whole diary.

On method: whichever costs you least effort at the moment of eating is the right one, because that is the moment tracking succeeds or fails. Protein is the number worth watching second

If you only track one thing beyond total calories, make it protein. In a deficit it helps preserve muscle rather than losing it alongside fat, and it is the most satiating of the three macronutrients, which quietly makes the deficit easier to hold. It is also the one most people are furthest from without realising, because breakfast and snacks are typically where it disappears.

Carbohydrate and fat matter less than the internet suggests once total calories and protein are handled. Most of the endless argument about their ratio is a rounding error next to consistency, and a split you find easy to eat is better than an optimal one you cannot sustain.

When to stop
